Will Shields, Donnie Edwards will serve as captains for East-West Shrine Bowl
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs will be well-represented on the sidelines of this year’s edition of the annual East-West Shrine Bowl with the news that two of the four captains are former Chiefs players: linebacker Donnie Edwards and offensive lineman Will Shields.
Being a captain for the East-West Shrine Bowl means being around for the practice sessions during the week before the game as well as being around on the sidelines during the actual contest. The former players can help future NFL prospects gain a better understanding of how to translate their skill set into what NFL coaches will ask them to do.
Joining Edwards and Shields as captains will be former St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson and Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.
The NFL announced their captains for the East-West Shrine Bowl on Monday.
Shields will need no introduction for readers here knowing he was perhaps the single greatest offensive lineman to ever suit up at Arrowhead Stadium. Shields was a long-term fixture at left guard for the Chiefs who ended up as a 12-time Pro Bowl performer. He’s already a member of the team’s Hall of Fame and was inducted into Canton in 2015.
Edwards was a productive linebacker in the heart of the Chiefs defense for two separate stints—from 1996-2001 and again from 2007-08. He was a two-time second-team All-Pro and retired as one of the team’s most versatile linebackers ever with 23.5 career sacks to go with 28 interceptions.
The East-West Shrine Bowl is scheduled for February 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can find full details and rosters for the game here.
