The Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of smaller moves on Wednesday with the news that they’d signed offensive lineman Roderick Johnson and defensive lineman Andrew Billings to the team’s practice squad.
According to NFL reporter Field Yates, the Chiefs also made a bit of room by releasing running back Elijah McGuire from the squad, which opened up another spot in addition to terminated contracts put forth by the club earlier this week. That was a list of four players including veterans like linebacker Shilique Calhoun and cornerback Josh Jackson.
The addition of Billings and Johnson certainly firm up the trenches for the Chiefs in considerable ways going forward into the postseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a pair of linemen—one on each side of the ball—to the practice squad.
Johnson is a big man at 306 pounds and 6’6 feet tall. The St. Louis native is 26 years old and comes with experience with the Houston Texans from 2018-2020, not to shorter stints with the Cleveland Browns (2017) and Miami Dolphins (2021). He was originally the Brown’ fifth round pick out of Florida State in 2017..
As for Billings, he’s a mountain of a man at 330 pounds or so and gives teams a run-stuffer in the middle of the defensive front. Billings was a fourth round pick for the Cincinnati Bengals after taking the big man out of Baylor. He became a starter for the Bengals inside for three seasons, but he sat out the season due to COVID in 2020 after also losing his role when Zac Taylor took over the team.
Billings spent this season on the Dolphins practice squad for a hot minute after being waived by the Browns. He played sparingly in six games for Cleveland and now faces an uphill climb to make it with the Chiefs.
