Meet the KC Chiefs first signings to futures contracts for 2022
By Matt Conner
Mathew Sexton, WR
Played college ball at: Eastern Michigan
Played professionally with: Pittsburgh Steelers
Mathew Sexton joins the Chiefs as a smaller wideout (5’10, 175 lbs.) who went overlooked in the 2020 NFL Draft after producing on offense and special teams all four seasons at Eastern Michigan University (Maxx Crosby’s alma mater). In four seasons, Sexton had a total of 100 catches to his name for 1,335 yards and 9 touchdowns.
After the draft, Sexton caught on with The Spring League (a non-NFL affiliated developmental league) in the hopes of showcasing his skills further and the Pittsburgh Steelers showed some interest. They signed him to their 90-man roster and he lasted through the entire preseason in 2021 with the team, earning looks as a returner and wide receiver. From there, he was released when roster cuts were due and has been waiting for another opportunity thereafter.
For the Chiefs, the team has a number of key special teams players potentially moving on this spring, so having a younger candidate to potentially work out for Dave Toub as a punt returner and/or gunner isn’t a bad move.
