KC Chiefs work out former Cowboys running back
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs look like they should be fairly confident in the first few layers of talent in the backfield, but general manager Brett Veach is always looking for further depth and potential prospects, which is why they recently hosted running back Brendan Knox for a free agent workout, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.
Knox is a first-year player who went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft after wrapping up his college career at Marshall. The Dallas Cowboys took an interest and signed him after the draft, but he was released when active roster cuts were due and didn’t sign on after that.
This is actually the second time this season that the Chiefs have checked in on Knox for such a workout. They also brought him in back in September for a visit along with wide receiver Kelvin Harmon but nothing came of it at the time.
The Chiefs recently brought in RB Brenden Knox for a workout.
Knox is a thicker back who projects well as a special teams contributor who could be a backup running back who wouldn’t embarrass himself as an extra blocker. He had 24 rushing touchdowns at Marshall with a career 5.2 yards/carry average and a total of 2,852 yards on 555 carries in three seasons for the Thundering Herd.
Right now, the Chiefs have Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams as their primary contributors in the backfield with Derrick Gore ready to supply reps as needed as well while Jerick McKinnon is on injured reserve. The Chiefs also have Elijah McGuire on the practice squad in case of further injury concerns.
New interest in Knox likely signals a potential signing for the offseason here if Veach liked what he saw in his second visit. Perhaps the team will replace McGuire going forward for a long look in the offseason.
Either way, going forward, Knox is clearly on the Chiefs’ radar with two visits and both McKinnon and Williams are scheduled to hit free agency this spring.
