Kurt Warner predicts Patrick Mahomes’ presence puts Chiefs on top in AFC

For all the importance placed on various positions on both sides of the ball, the preaching of importance of special teams, or the maxims that speak of the game being won or lost in the trenches, the truth is that nothing matters more when it matters most than what an NFL franchise has at quarterback. When the game of football has the most at stake, in today’s modern game, the quarterback matters most.

That’s proven true time and again and it looks like it’s only going to continue as a trend given the wave of passing numbers in today’s game. Tom Brady has helped establish a new era and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is carrying that trend forward.

For Kurt Warner, who spoke on NFL GameDay on Sunday, he believes the Chiefs are the team to beat in the AFC once again despite the fact they’ve lost four games already this year and are behind in the race for the division’s top seed. The Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens, and New England Patriots all have a better record.

Here’s his take on the AFC heading into Week 13:

In case you’d rather read it, Warner says, “When it comes down to it, I’m looking at the quarterbacks. When it comes down to having to win in the playoffs, it’s about the quarterback, there’s nobody that I’m going to trust more in the AFC than Patrick Mahomes because he’s been there, he’s done it, and he’s got that special in him, so I’m going with the Chiefs as well.”

Warner knows a thing or two about what it takes to win at quarterback given his own 12-year history in the league. He was a two-time Most Valuable Player who also won a Super Bowl with the Rams and was the MVP of that game as well. Now as he surveys the field, he likes Mahomes and the Chiefs to find their way past the likes of Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Ryan Tannehill, Mac Jones, and the like.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will flex their muscles and show what they can do offensively against the Denver Broncos in primetime on Sunday Night Football.
