The Chiefs defense is awful.

Really bad.

Embarrassingly inefficient.

In their five games this season, the Chiefs defense has given up 36, 30 and 38 points in its losses and 29 and 30 points in its wins. The Chiefs are on pace to give up 554.2 points this season. According to Stat Muse, that would be the worst defense in NFL history, topping the 1981 Baltimore Colts, who gave up 533 points on their way to a 2-14 season.

The good news, as we have pointed out on this site before, is that the Chiefs do have talent on defense. The unit is largely made up of players that were on the team last season. The 2020 Chiefs defense gave up 362 points. That was 11th in the NFL.

This defense can play better and odds are it will play better as the season goes on. Right now, however, the Chiefs need to do everything they can to fix the mess that is their defense and that starts with playing fundamentally sound football.
