Kansas City Chiefs
I would like to credit my dad with the following conspiracy theory as to why the Chiefs have lost the last two weeks: it is because the NFL wanted Andy Reid to get his 100th win in Kansas City at his old stomping ground—Philly. That’s why we lost right? Right??
No. It’s because the entire team is playing poorly. This game should have been a blow out after the first quarter. The offense gave up three turnovers on three drives. I’m sorry but WHAT?! The defense continues to operate as a sieve in the red zone and apparently has an aversion to touching other quarterbacks. I get it, it’s the age of COVID when we are supposed to maintain a 6 foot distance, but guys, not on the football field!
I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed. This team is too good to succumb to silly mistakes. It is uncharacteristic, but when we see this happen two weeks in a row, we are forced to ask whether it is uncharacteristic or is this what the team is now? Are we going to see them make these boneheaded mistakes week after week and watch the playoffs slip away? I really hope not. I hope there is enough leadership on this team to pull them out of this funk.
Honestly there are two things keeping me going this week. The first is recalling the 2019 stretch in the middle of the season where the Chiefs lost 4 of 5 before they figured things out and went on to win the Super Bowl. The second is this:
We finally got a Jody Fortson touchdown! Way to go! Cannot wait to see more!
On the injury front, the Chiefs lost Rashad Fenton during the game to a concussion. No word on his progress through concussion protocol so that will definitely be something to watch with Charvarious Ward still dealing with a quad injury. Frank Clark missed his second game of the season with a hamstring injury and is starting to face some serious questions about his worth on the team.
The Chiefs might be getting some help, however, as Willie Gay Jr. is eligible to return from IR this week. The Chiefs also made a splash in signing Josh Gordon to the practice squad. If he can stay clean and learn the playbook quickly, he might be just the type of signing who can really help the offense with a dynamic WR2.
Next week, the Chiefs travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. The Eagles just lost to the Cowboys on Monday Night Football so they are coming off a short week in which they had to travel. The Eagles have a lot of problems and are certainly not of the same caliber team as the three the Chiefs have already faced. Maybe this game will hand Andy his 100th KC win and maybe this will be the week the Chiefs use to right the ship.
