The run game

Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a night to forget in Baltimore last week, but he bounced back on Sunday with his best game of the season so far against the Chargers. The second year running back had season highs in yards (100), carries (17) and yard per attempt (5.9), as well as a season-long 14-yard carry.

It was the third 100-yard game of Edwards-Helaire’s career as Kansas City looked dangerous on the ground for the first time this season. The interior o-line provided great push all day and K.C. was consistently able to pick up good chunks on first down and in short yardage situations.

After not being targeted once in Baltimore, Edwards-Helaire had two catches on his two targets on Sunday, including a 10-yard touchdown on a screen play that gave the Chiefs the lead in the third quarter.

It wasn’t a perfect performance. After a costly fumble late in the game against Baltimore, Edwards-Helaire fumbled again on Sunday when the ball was knocked lose in the second quarter. The former LSU running back had two fumbles in his entire college career, but now has two in as many weeks.

But despite the turnover, overall, it was still a strong bounce-back performance and largely a step in the right direction. It should hopefully serve as a confidence boost after last week’s costly error.

If KC can continue to get similar production from Edwards-Helaire moving forward, it will provide another weapon and a significant boost for the offense.
