Former K.C. Chiefs running back Darwin Thompson is hoping a change of environment will lead to greater playing time and opportunities. Sam McDowell of the Star is reporting that Thompson has chosen the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad over the Chiefs, which means Kansas City is now down three players from those they cut (if they’d wanted to have them all back on the practice squad).
The Chiefs cut Thompson loose before roster cuts as they made tough decisions about the offensive backfield. They also released Derrick Gore after a strong preseason showing.
Instead, the Chiefs decided to keep three running backs in total: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams, and Jerick McKinnon, who outplayed everyone vying for more playing time as a well-rounded free agent signing. The team also has Michael Burton as a fullback. (Note: Elijah McGuire was around but his place with the organization is uncertain. He’s still listed among those on injured reserve, but it was also reported he was released with an injury settlement.)
The Chiefs drafted Thompson in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft after he turned scouts’ heads with a one-year wonder sort of performance at Utah State. He’s a tough runner between the tackles who can generate power well with his legs and pad level. He also has decent hands and overall speed. Unfortunately he could never carve out any meaningful playing time for the Chiefs in two full seasons with the team,.
Thompson was used even less in 2020 than he was in 2019, so the trajectory here was not good for him. Perhaps the Bucs will give him more playing time or a better opportunity in Bruce Arians’ system.
Thompson had 64 total carries for 225 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns for the Chiefs.
