For the dozens of players on the K.C. Chiefs roster who are knee-deep in competition for an active roster spot, there are several levels at which they must try to impress Andy Reid and his coaching staff. From the earliest moments of team meetings and offseason training activities to the demands of training camp practices, it’s already been a tough road to make their NFL dreams come true. Now comes the hardest part.

As the Chiefs get ready to take the field for their first preseason game of the 2021 season—visiting Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California in order to test their skills against the 49ers—these young Chiefs will have their greatest chance yet to prove themselves.

While the starters might get a few reps or even multiple series to lead out the game and shake off any rust from a long offseason, the reality is that backups and fringe roster players are going to get the lion’s share of playing time in the preseason for every team. That’s certainly true for the Chiefs. That means fans will see more of Anthony Gordon than Patrick Mahomes, Daurice Fountain than Tyreek Hill.

While that’s not the most exciting product on the field to watch, it’s the opportunity these guys have been waiting for. For a handful of promising players, it’s a real chance to cement their stock as exciting young players who likely have what it takes to make the team and contribute to a Super Bowl contender despite their inexperience. Here’s a look at some young players to watch up close given the playing time they’re likely to receive.
