Undrafted free agents

The Chiefs signed very few rookie free agents this year as compared to past seasons, which means that the roster is more loaded than ever and we’re less likely to see surprises like Turk Wharton. That said, it’s going to be interesting to see who begins to emerge—if anyone—from this current crop of young players.

Steve Buechele is likely to get the most attention as the only quarterback of the lot. The position attracts the most cameras as it is, and the Chiefs have so few in camp that Buechele is going to get some press this week as he works out with players. His battle with Anthony Gordon for any sort of QB3 role will be a nice subplot to watch throughout the preseason.

The bulk of the competition here will be in the secondary. Zayne Anderson, Devon Key, Marlon Character, and DiCaprio Bootle are all battling among the defensive backs in camp and will hope to turn heads in the secondary. BYU’s Anderson looks like a young Dan Sorensen, while Key comes as a tough, physical hitter from Western Kentucky. Both are the best bets of the lot.

Elsewhere, Georgia defensive end Malik Herring will hope to show he’s recovering well from injury, and South Alabama’s Riley Cole will join a young group competing at linebacker.
