Chiefs Kingdom, don’t overthink this.
Julio Jones makes so much sense for the Kansas City Chiefs, given what the alleged cost is. You’re telling me you wouldn’t give up a second rounder for two to three more years of play from Jones? That seems like such a small price for a top five wide receiver in the NFL.
Sure, high draft picks are extremely important, and even more so with the high end cost of some players on the Chiefs. However, with the cap rising substantially next season and with some players realistically coming off the books (Frank Clark), Jones is a piece the Chiefs can fit—not just on the field but on the books as well.
I understand everyone not wanting to give up draft picks, but when you have a sure thing in front of you, you take it. Yes, that second rounder could be a stud, but he could also be Breeland Speaks. There are no guarantees in the NFL, and the talk of “potential” seems to cloud our judgment at times. Trust me, I would love the Chiefs to get a Julio Jones type of player in the second round, but the likelihood of that is very slim. It’s like saying the second round pick could be a great wide receiver, but you have a great wideout right in front of you.
Chiefs fans shouldn’t overthink a Julio Jones trade.
The addition of Jones gives the Chiefs unlimited firepower while calming any concerns at the wide receiver position.
To the folks who have complained about Jones and his health, it is true he has been banged up a lot, but he plays through those injuries. Last year was the first year since 2013 where he hasn’t played in at least 14 games. Jones is a warrior, and even slightly hurt, he puts up ridiculous numbers.
While the touchdown numbers have left some room to be desired, his big-play ability in the red zone coupled with Hill and Kelce are tantalizing. Jones would ease pressure off of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce and would give Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid another option when the field is shortened. Less trick plays would ensue when you have three guys who can all beat their man.
My thinking here is if financially it makes sense and the cost is only a second rounder, or even slightly more, this is a no-brainer. Why overthink this? I’m not saying the Chiefs need Jones, but having one of the best wide receivers in the game join forces with a top five wide out, the NFL’s top tight end, and the league’s top QB makes this offense beyond lethal. Add a 17th game this season, and Mahomes will be shattering records.
