Four must-see KC Chiefs games in 2021
By Matt Conner
After months of knowing the opponents who were going to be on the K.C. Chiefs schedule for the upcoming 2021 regular season, along with the official expansion of the season to include a 17th game, the NFL finally revealed the complete schedule that shows who when, and where the Chiefs will be playing in the ’21 campaign.
The new schedule is loaded with as many primetime opportunities as any other team, and there are many intriguing opponents. This year, the AFC West will also be interesting to watch, especially as the L.A. Chargers hope to use the momentum gained from close contests last year and the growth in Justin Herbert’s game to be able to actually steal a win (or two?) from the Chiefs and close the divisional gap.
However, some games are more entertaining than others, with a few even forcing us to use a label of “must-see television”. We thought we’d take a closer look at those games and break down the games that are going to draw the most anticipation for fans this season. And it starts with the one everyone is talking about already.
Week 9 – vs. Green Bay Packers
This is the game everyone’s been taking about since the NFL was rumored to add a 17th game to the regular season schedule in 2021. The NFC North was reportedly going to be facing the AFC West in ’21 if the NFL put things to an owner’s vote and—Voila!—here it is.
Aaron Rodgers vs. Patrick Mahomes is a quarterback matchup of the ages, a midseason game that will feel like a late postseason matchup. Both teams have serious Super Bowl dreams, have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, and are very well-coached. There are stars on offense and defense, even apart from their household name quarterbacks, but of course, it still all starts at the top.
Rodgers in particular is going to be fun to watch in ’21 in every game—not just against the Chiefs—as he takes out whatever aggression he has on the field. He already won the league’s MVP trophy last season, but no one would be surprised to see him match or come close to those same numbers again given the internal fire he’ll likely be playing with after a dramatic offseason in which he tried to force his way off the Packers roster.
Then again, that’s also the big question here: Will Rodgers be the quarterback for the Packers when they visit the Chiefs? The NFL seems to think so, as they’ve scheduled the Packers in a few primetime games, especially late in the season. You don’t do that if you think Jordan Love is going to be the one taking snaps after the trade deadline. Then again, no one likely saw this much drama coming in the first place.
Still until Rodgers is traded elsewhere, Packers vs. Chiefs is going to be the game of the season for more than just regional fans of each team.
