Round 5, pick 181, Pitt EDGE Patrick Jones

Ideally, I like many others, would like the Chiefs to address the defensive end position before round five, but I believe this edge class is deeper and better than people are giving it credit for and the Chiefs also bought themselves time in needing to address the defensive line with the addition of Jarran Reed. The team has already said that Chris Jones can fill in some on the edge, so there’s not a massive rush to force something at defensive end. Nevertheless, a pass-rushing specialist from the edge position should be what the Chiefs are looking for at this point.

Pittsburgh’s Patrick Jones would be a great pick up in the fifth if he’s there. At 6’5″, 260 lbs, he has the build of a typical Steve Spagnuolo defensive line and he was super productive at Pitt, totaling 21.5 sacks and 32 tackles for loss as well as 5 forced fumbles in four seasons with the Panthers. Jones is an explosive athlete with an impressive first-step which is exactly what the Chiefs need in their next defensive end.

Someone who can simply rush the passer opposite of Frank Clark and be a presence is ideal. That’s why the Chiefs went after Melvin Ingram at the beginning of this offseason. Even though he wasn’t really a scheme fit, he was someone that could be a speed rusher on 3rd downs and be a fastball that the Chiefs could throw at offenses occasionally. Well, Jones could play that sort of role as a rookie and he also has potential as a run defender, too, if he continues to come along physically in the NFL.
