3. A 22-Year Playoff Victory Drought Lifted

The 2015 playoff victory against the Houston Texans may not have been one of Alex Smith’s more impressive performances, but the moment was big for the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the lack of a single playoff win since the 1993 season, Smith delivered to Chiefs’ fans what had been avoiding and tormenting them for years.

For playoff game after playoff game, the Chiefs would find a new way to screw it up and end the season with another brutal loss. Smith experienced this himself as the Chiefs QB in his first season on the team. The 45-44 loss to the Indianapolis Colts may be one of the most stunning losses that Chiefs fans have ever had to go through. Smith played an outstanding game, throwing for 378 yards and 4 touchdowns, while also leading the Chiefs inside the Colts 40 yard-line with three minutes left. However, the Colts 28-point comeback placed another thorn in the side of Chiefs fans, who were still waiting to win a playoff game.

Missing the playoffs the following season, Alex Smith and the Chiefs capitalized on their next shot against the Houston Texans in 2015. Facing off against the AFC South Champions, the fifth-seeded Chiefs had put themselves in a position to steal a road playoff victory.

Beginning the game with a Knile Davis kickoff return for a touchdown, the Chiefs never looked back. Similarly to the Colts loss, the Chiefs got up big early, but this time they never lost control. With an all-around performance from the offense, defense, and special teams, the Chiefs blew out the Texans by a final score of 30-0.

As Smith wasn’t forced to do much in this game, he was still looked at by many Chiefs fans as the reason the team was in the position to finally win a playoff game. A playoff victory placed Smith in a special territory in the Chiefs organization. Before Smith’s victory, only Len Dawson, Steve DeBerg, and Joe Montana have been able to lead the team to a playoff win. Now, Smith had officially placed his mark on the Kansas City Chiefs.
