Celebrating Alex Smith’s top five moments with Kansas City Chiefs
5. Turn 1-5 Start to 11-5 Finish
The 2015 season could not have started worse for Alex Smith and the Chiefs. After winning the season opener against the Texans 27-20, the Chiefs fell into a downward spiral. After losing three straight high scoring battles to the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs held a 17-3 lead in the third quarter in a Week 5 game against the Bears when the season looked even more doomed.
Star running back Jamaal Charles tore his ACL on a run in the red zone, leaving the Chiefs without their offensive star. With an eventual loss to the Bears, Week 6 gave the Chiefs another loss and put Smith in a tough position. Without his best weapon and already behind in the standings, the Chiefs season felt over. With only former Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and a young Travis Kelce, Smith’s help on the offensive side of the ball was very limited.
With little chance of salvaging the season, the Chiefs were somehow able to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-13, with Smith throwing the game sealing touchdown to wide receiver Chris Conley with a little over five minutes left. From then on, the Chiefs took off with Smith at the helm. The Chiefs followed up the Steelers victory with a 45-10 blowout against the Detroit Lions, and continued on the rest of the regular season, beating everyone in their way.
Smith’s statistical performance for the season does not stand out, yet even without Charles, the Chiefs offense continued to score. The 2015 Chiefs offense ranked ninth in points scored with 405, and finished with the second fewest turnovers lost at 15. Smith’s efficient and consistent style helped save this nearly lost season, as he pushed the Kansas City Chiefs to the 5th seed in the AFC. A season that was, at one point, ruined later yieled a historical moment in Chiefs history—and Alex Smith’s career.
