KC Chiefs lose RB coach Deland McCullough to college ranks
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs likely thought they were going to make it through the entirety of the NFL season without losing a single member of their coaching staff when every head coaching vacancy was filled without Eric Bieniemy or another assistant earning a spot. However, minor changes are still likely to be made given that the team now has an opening of their own.
Deland McCullough has officially left his post as the Chiefs running backs coach to coach the same position at the University of Indiana.
The move also includes an important promotion to “associate head coach” which gives McCullough a likely faster track to greater positions after earning some solid pro coaching experience on a Super Bowl winner next to Andy Reid.
Deland McCullough accepted a new role with the Indiana Hoosiers.
McCullough was the Hoosiers’ running backs coach from 2011 to 2016, so Bloomington is a very familiar city for him. He left Indiana to join the USC staff in 2017 and from there he made the leap to the pro level. That four year foray earned him a solid promotion at the same school where he earned most of his coaching experience.
McCullough filled in for Eric Bieniemy, who vacated the RB coach spot to become the offensive coordinator for the team when Matt Nagy left to become head coach of the Chicago Bears. Now the Chiefs will have to find a new running backs coach to take over or remake some of their staff to cover the loss. It will be interesting to see if the Chiefs dip once again into the coaching ranks or make this an internal hire.
