The Kansas City Chiefs enjoyed an incredible night on Sunday with their win over the Buffalo Bills to secure a spot in Super Bowl LV. Unfortunately, the Chiefs suffered a major loss along the offensive line with news that Eric Fisher went down with an Achilles injury in the fourth quarter.
The loss of Fisher will further stress a line that’s already plugging holes in the proverbial dam with several starts made by the likes of Mike Remmers, Andrew Wylie and Nick Allegretti.
Fisher has been the lone lineman to start every game this season for the Chiefs in a year in which the entire offensive front has required a patchwork job. From injuries to Kelechi Osemele and Mitchell Schwartz to opt outs by Lucas Niang and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the Chiefs coaching staff has been required to make myriad changes all year long. Now on the verge of the biggest game of the year, they’ve suffered another tremendous loss.
The Chiefs learned last year how tough it is to move the chains without Fisher when he missed 8 games last year with a core muscle injury that required surgery. Fortunately he was able to come back in the season’s second half and helped the Chiefs win their first championship in 50 seasons.
Fisher first joined the Chiefs as the No. 1 overall selection back in the 2013 NFL Draft and has served as the team’s starting left tackle ever since. He was named to his second Pro Bowl in 2020 after also making the team in 2018.
More details will be forthcoming about Fisher’s condition, but it seems obvious that the Chiefs will have more changes to make along the line heading into Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
