Almost every NFL mock draft has the KC Chiefs taking an offensive lineman early.

If you look around at the latest mocks for the 2021 NFL Draft, you’ll see one position targeted for the Kansas City Chiefs: the offensive line.

Perhaps the best analogy for the Chiefs offensive line this season is a patchwork quilt. The Chiefs have been forced to piece together various parts of a puzzle that didn’t initially fit together, grabbing both prospects down the depth chart and veterans available in free agency to form a cohesive whole—one that would enable the league’s most dangerous offense to still do what it can and sustain a campaign to “run it back” as defending Super Bowl champions.

While the Chiefs are still crossing their fingers for the success of o-line in the present, the front office is almost certainly planning for the future as well. They simply cannot head into another season with the same known fractures and concerns that have surfaced this season, even if they want to believe the best about the future for veterans like Mitchell Schwartz.

Can Schwartz return to form after such a long, storied career at right tackle for the Chiefs, especially when the injury is related to back pain? Can Laurent Duvernay-Tardif solve an issue at guard after a full calendar year away from the game? Will the Chiefs attempt to bring back any departing vets like Kelechi Osemele, Stefen Wisniewski, Austin Reiter, or Daniel Kilgore? What about Andrew Wylie, who is a restricted free agent?

Moving forward, the Chiefs line in 2021 and beyond could (and maybe should) look very different. And much of it could start with the draft focus in 2021.

Here’s a look at the players currently associated with the Chiefs in the latest round of 2021 mock draft.
