The Kansas City Chiefs have traded running back DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins.

NFL reporter Albert Breer has news that the Kansas City Chiefs have snuck in a trade under the wire of the NFL’s deadline for such moves by sending running back DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins for future draft considerations.

The Chiefs first signed Washington this offseason in a move to bolster the backfield and provide competition for the scatback role. Most of the buzz surrounding the one-year deal was about reuniting quarterback Patrick Mahomes with his former teammate from Texas Tech, but Washington was never able to climb the depth chart in a way he might have envisioned before signing.

Even after Damien Williams opted out for this season, the Chiefs seemed inclined to go with Darrel Williams and even Darwin Thompson over Washington at first. Then as the season progressed, the team was able to sign Le’Veon Bell to a free agent deal after his release from the New York Jets, which pretty much sealed Washington’s fate from any future playing time as well.

Washington came to K.C. as a familiar face after a few years with the Oakland (turned Las Vegas) Raiders. In the AFC West, Washington was a familiar face who had nice hands out of the backfield for the Raiders as a change-of-pace back. However, it was a difficult preseason for Washington to try to even make the Chiefs with their loaded roster as well as a lack of preseason games in which to show what he can do.

The Chiefs have swapped Washington to Miami and will receive a single round boost of a draft pick in compensation, taking them from their own 7th round pick (which would likely be at the very tail end of the draft) in exchange for Miami’s sixth round choice. The Chiefs traded their own sixth last spring to get back into the 7th round of this year’s draft for cornerback BoPete Keyes.

Washington appeared in a single game for the Chiefs in the first half of the season and had only 3 carries for 5 yards in Week 7’s win over the Denver Broncos.
