Patrick Mahomes put on a clinic as the Chiefs easily put away the Jets.

The Kansas City Chiefs came into this game as overwhelming favorites against the visiting New York Jets. It turns out that oddsmakers know a thing or two about what to expect. Patrick Mahomes put on a clinic and the Chiefs took care of the Jets from the opening drive and coasted to a 35-9 victory at Arrowhead.

Mahomes finished with a final line of 31 completions of 42 attempts for 416 yards and 5 touchdowns that keeps him squarely in the conversation for league MVP, an honor he won for the first time two seasons ago.

The Chiefs took command early on with a nice seven-play drive for 90 yards that featured a perfect start to the game for Mahomes. He went 5-for-5 on the scoring drive and hit several different receivers, and the series was capped by a little shovel pass to Mecole Hardman who ran it in 30 yards for his third touchdown of the season.

The Jets responded with a long enough drive to allow Sergio Castillo to hit a 39-yard field goal to get on the board at 7-3. From there, however, the Chiefs made quick work of another successful first quarter drive. After a fake punt on fourth down, which featured a nice throw from Tommy Townsend to Byron Pringle for the conversion, Mahomes hit Tyreek Hill on a deep route for a 36-yard touchdown.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a nice second quarter drive on which he had 4 catches for 59 yards. During the drive, he passed the 7,000 yards receiving mark for his career, which made him the second-fastest tight end to ever hit the figure. He also capped the drive with a short shovel pass for a score. Armani Watts blocked a field goal on the final drive of the half, and K.C. went into the locker room with a 21-9 lead.

The second half took a bit longer to get going for the Chiefs, who had to punt on their first drive and turned it over on downs on their second drive, but the team’s defense came up huge in the second half. The Jets punted on their first three drives in the second half and then turned it over via a fumble forced by Dan Sorensen to close the third quarter.

The offense finally got going toward the end of the third quarter when Mahomes completed 6 straight passes to move the chains 83 yards. The drive ended with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson. A quick drive early in the fourth quarter featured another bomb of 41 yards to Hill for his second touchdown of the game. At that point, the Chiefs sent in the subs and simply ran the ball again and again to run the clock off in the fourth.

The Chiefs picked up their seventh win of the season in Week 8 and will look to head to 8-1 when they host the Carolina Panthers in Week 9.
