Secondary must return to form

Despite the lack of pass rush, what the Chiefs got from their secondary was abysmal against Las Vegas. Perhaps the return of Bashaud Breeland messed with the unit’s chemistry. Perhaps the team simply wasn’t prepared for Derek Carr to air it out like he did. Perhaps the team simply had an off day. Or, perhaps the players just are not very good.

If it’s the latter, expect Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen to connect often on Monday night, and cause major headaches for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. This must be a “get right” game for every single player in the secondary, because almost all of them played terribly in Week 5.

Charvarius Ward, quite obviously, stood out as the worst of the bunch. If he turns in a couple of more of those performances, Rashad Fenton may well replace him as the second outside corner. Down the road, Ward could find himself replaced upon the return of rookie L’Jarius Sneed.

I do strongly believe that Spags will find the right combination and usage of the nine solid players who, when healthy, make up the team’s secondary unit before January. That is when it matters most. But, for the sake of our collective Kingdom sanity, let’s hope that they find the right mix before Monday night.
