The Kansas City Chiefs are a quarter of the way through the season and are sitting pretty at 4-0. Let’s hand out some awards for who brought them there.
Hey, I get it: We’re only 4 games in, but that is a quarter of the season and that means there are some quarter season awards to hand out.
The Kansas City Chiefs are off to an impressive start of the #RunItBack campaign at 4-0 while getting some great production from guys you might not think about as much. While the players I am listing today might not be the guy who I think will win the Chiefs award at the end of the season, what counts is what a player has done production-wise through the first 4 games.
Without further ado, here are our quarter season awards.
Offensive Rookie of the Quarter
I guess we will start with the obvious. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is winning this award so far with no one else even getting a chance. In fairness, CEH would be deserving even if there was more competition. While he has cooled off since his electric debut, he is starting to make more of an impact through the air.
While the numbers aren’t great at 4.3 yards/carry for 304 yards on the ground, Edwards-Helaire has shown great contact balance and the ability to churn out tough yards even when there isn’t much there. I know we all expected him to be able to gash teams while defenses are scared of getting beat by Mahomes and his arm, but the offensive line hasn’t given him a ton to work with either. This is a line built on protecting Patrick more than guys who are maulers.
While Edwards-Helaire has some room to work, he has had a lot of quality runs to build on which only bodes well for the future. I haven’t noticed too much of an issue in pass protection, which is typically the hardest area for a rookie to learn. He has also made a few spectacular catches with one that got called back for holding in Week 3 coming to mind.
Edwards-Helaire has an extremely good chance of going over 1,000 yards on the ground this season and should chip in over 500 through the air as well. (He’s on pace for 1,732 yards from scrimmage.) That would be good enough for NFL ROY consideration as well.
