The L.A. Chargers received the news that Mike Pouncey will sit out the rest of 2020.

The Los Angeles Chargers have, once again, received some horrible injury news. This time, they learned that starting center Mike Pouncey will be out for the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery on an injured hip.

Pouncey had already missed the team’s opening contest against the Cincinnati Bengals and had sat out practice leading up to facing the Kansas City Chiefs for the home opener in Week 2. Now it’s official that the Chargers will need to find a new starting center for the duration of the year.

Pouncey is perhaps the best lineman for the L.A. Chargers when healthy, but that’s been a concern for most of his professional career. Pouncey is a four-time Pro Bowl performer, even as recently as 2018 in his first season in southern California. However, Pouncey only played in five total games last season with the Chargers and now he will be out for a full season in 2020.

Pouncey signed a $9 million extension with the team last September that carried him through the 2020 season, so he will likely be a free agent after this season—that is, if he decides to continue his NFL career at the age of 32 (what he will be next July).

As for the Chargers, they continue to make due after injuries to numerous players. The team lost All-Pro safety Derwin James before the year even began. Linebacker Drue Tranquill was injured in Week 1 and will miss the rest of the year as well. Even Joey Bosa, the team’s star pass rusher, appeared on the injury report heading into the Chiefs game in Week 2, although his status is uncertain as of press time.
