Patrick Mahomes vs. Chargers secondary

The battle between MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes and L.A.’s budding young star safety Derwin James is one we’ve been excited about since the Chargers drafted him. Unfortunately we have not gotten to see the matchup much due to James’ injury history. This season features two more lost opportunities at the matchup, but there is still plenty of intrigue here.

We do not need to spend space here talking about Patrick Mahomes. He is the best player in the NFL, a generational talent who has already transformed the Chiefs. He has the potential to light up any opposing defense on any given Sunday.

However, the Chargers are no slouches in pass coverage, and they pose a threat to shut down just about any offense they face. On Sunday, they held first overall pick and the Bengals’ offense to just 193 yards in the air, including key breakups on the game’s final drive to key the victory. Casey Heyward, Jr. and Chris Harris, Jr. make up one of the better cornerback tandems in the NFL.

No one expects Los Angeles to shut down Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelce, etc., but they should pose an interesting test for the high-flying offense.
