The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly working on extensions for Andy Reid, Brett Veach.
It was only three years ago that the Kansas City Chiefs made a change at the general manager position as they essentially replaced John Dorsey with an internal promotion for Brett Veach. In 2020, both Veach and head coach Andy Reid are in line for a round of contract extensions from team owner Clark Hunt.
According to CBS Sports Jason La Canfora, the Chiefs are interested in new contract extensions for both leaders after winning the franchise’s first Super Bowl in a half century.
Back in 2017, the Chiefs were nearing the end of deals for both Reid and Dorsey with significant decisions to make. Dorsey had joined with Reid to spearhead a complete restoration of a once-proud franchise back to its glory days—or perhaps even better. Prior to the arrival of both, the Chiefs had finished with a league-low two wins in the final season for then-GM Scott Pioli. Immediately the Chiefs made the playoffs the following season after picking first overall in the 2013 NFL Draft.
However, Hunt decided to allow Dorsey out from under his contract early with the team when it was made clear that he wouldn’t be re-signed for another long-term deal alongside Reid. Reports of internal tension and poor communication floated around Dorsey’s exit, but no matter the reason, the Chiefs decided to promote Veach to GM as a longtime, trusted confidante of Reid.
The Chiefs had already reached perennial playoff team under Dorsey and Reid, but with Patrick Mahomes at the helm at quarterback and both Dorsey and Reid in place, the Chiefs have become a potential dynasty in the making. They were only a play away from playing in the Super Bowl two seasons ago and won it outright this past season. They are favorites once again with several impact players already locked up for the foreseeable future.
If Reid originally signed a five-year deal and Veach was given the same for continuity of leadership, they’re both still around for another two years. But it’s clear that the Chiefs want to keep this train rolling for the long haul and it sounds like Hunt is ready to lock up his leaders in the same way they took care of Mahomes.
