Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis loved the addition of Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Former NFL running back Terrell Davis only had great things to say when recently asked about the Kansas City Chiefs addition of Clyde Edwards-Helaire this offseason.
Davis spoke on NFL Total Access about the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick and noted that “the rich just got richer” with the team’s ability to add the first overall running back taken in this deep draft class of 2020.
"“When you watch him play, he brings an excitement to the game. They can put him all over the field. He can be in a wide set. He can run multiple routes. He’s not just a back like myself that you throw out there and I’m just eye candy out there. He’s actually running real routes. He can do some damage. On that team with all the weapons, the rich just got richer.”"
Edwards-Helaire has been hailed as a perfect fit in the Chiefs offense before he’s even played a single snap on the field, which means great expectations are in store for him. That was also before Damien Williams, a fellow running back, opted out for the 2020 season, which opened up even more touches for Edwards-Helaire in the Chiefs backfield.
The pick used on Edwards-Helaire was a bit of a surprise given that the team was already loaded offensively. It was also the only first round pick in the team’s possession in three drafts, since they’d traded other first round picks from both 2018 and 2019 in trades for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and pass rusher Frank Clark, respectively.
Davis knows a thing or two about being an impact at the running back position, although he was a throwback player at the position, the sort of tough run-between-the-tackles hero who could grind out yardage even against a loaded box. The former Denver Broncos star was a three-time Pro Bowler who even led the league with 2,008 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in 1998—a Herculean effort that significantly aided his case for Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio.
Edwards-Helaire had 215 rushes for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground for the LSU Tigers last season. He also caught 55 passes for 453 yards and 1 receiving touchdown.
