Chris Jones recently spoke to reporters about the high bar he sets for himself.

Chris Jones has great expectations, not only of the Kansas City Chiefs but for himself as a player. Over the years, Chiefs Kingdom has seen Jones call his own shots in the preseason when it comes to individual or team goals, and this coming season is no different given that the defensive lineman says he wants to be the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2020.

On Monday, Jones spoke to reporters in a media session and explained his penchant for making preseason promises that set the bar high.

"“That’s something I’ve always done in my career—set my standards high as a player and try to incorporate it with my team. If I’m the best defensive player in the league then obviously I’m doing well for my team and helping my team be one of the best defenses in the league.“That’s my main goal year in and year out is to exert myself to be the best. That’s just one of my goals right now, to be the best I can be and the best defensive player in this league.”"

After years of excellent production for the Chiefs on a rookie deal, Jones is now being paid to be the elite performer he strives to be each season. The Chiefs rewarded Jones this offseason with a four-year extension worth up to $20-plus million per season, meaning he will work in tandem with Frank Clark to form the cornerstone of the Chiefs pass rush for the next half-decade.

Earlier this offseason, Jones also stated that he believes that he and the Chiefs can also win five-plus Super Bowl rings when all is said and done.

Jones led the Chiefs with 15.5 sacks per game in 2018 and, in doing so, set an NFL record for most consecutive games with at least one sack. Last season, Jones had 9 sacks in his first season in Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme, a season in which the lineman also dealt with a couple injuries.

Jones has 33 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 20 passes deflected and 2 interceptions for the Chiefs in his first four seasons in the NFL.
