The Kansas City Chiefs have taken a major hit to their defensive front with news that defensive lineman Chris Jones is “week to week” with a groin injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs walked into Week 5 with a number of significant injuries that had already affected the short-term roster construction. After their sloppy loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Chiefs were dealing with a much longer list of ailing players, including a massive hit to their defensive front in the groin injury suffered by Chris Jones.

In a game where Andrew Wylie, Xavier Wiliams, Anthony Hitchens and others also went down, the biggest loss was word that Jones was quickly removed from the game and declared out after coming up hurting with a clear groin muscle injury.

After the game, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport learned the long-term prognosis of Jones and passed it on, saying he was “week to week”.

In his absence, much will depend upon the status of Williams and whether or not he’s able to suit up for Week 6. The Chiefs have candidates like Joey Ivie on the practice squad as players who could sub in a pinch and provide some snaps along the interior. Still the loss of such a consistent, dynamic performer who requires attention in every team’s offensive game plan is going to be missed—beginning with the Houston Texans this week.

Jones is the star of the Chiefs defensive front seven, a force in the middle ready for a big-money extension. It will be interesting to see just how the Chiefs perform without him and how that influences the team’s financial commitment one way or the other. For now, however, most fans and the team are primarily concerned with seeing Jones back on the field sooner than later.
