Antonio Hamilton

Earlier this offseason, the Chiefs made a minor move at a position waiting for a major transaction when they signed Antonio Hamilton to a one-year deal in free agency. At the time, Chiefs Kingdom seemed to yawn collectively as they hoped for the front office to land a bigger fish for the secondary.

However, both general manager Brett Veach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub was ecstatic at the signing of Hamilton and for good reason. While special teams are often overlooked, Toub stated upon Hamilton’s signing that the Chiefs had just added a vital performer for every facet of his special teams units—a “four-phase starter”.

"“He’s a guy who can come in and make plays. You’ve seen him do with the Giants. I think we’re really fortunate to have him.”"

Specifically, Hamilton should step right in as the team’s gunner on special teams. Toub seems to think he’ll prove especially important in this role as the Chiefs fight for field position. The role demands awareness, intelligence, hands, and speed and Hamilton delivers on all fronts.

In an offseason where rookies are getting little time to adjust to the pro level, having a savvy veteran who can serve as an important special teams cog like Hamilton is going to be even more important. We can trust Toub that Hamilton is a part that should be appreciated rather than overlooked.
