The Kansas City Chiefs could lose a ton of free agents in 2021
Offensive Line
1. Austin Reiter
2. Kelechi Osemele
3. Andrew Wylie
4. Mike Remmers
The interior offensive line is one of my two biggest concerns for 2021 given the possible salary cap issues the Chiefs could be facing. It is definitely possible that the Chiefs could be looking at entering next offseason over the salary cap limit with all three of their starting interior linemen hitting free agency. While guys like Reiter and Wylie may be seen as replacement-level starters, you still have to go out and pay guys to replace them. It is possible that guys like Martinas Rankin and Nick Allegretti earn themselves a starting job or, at very least, enough playing time to make the Chiefs comfortable moving forward with them in 2021, but that is not a safe assumption.
The Chiefs made a huge financial commitment to their franchise quarterback this offseason and you can’t put him in jeopardy by skimping on the guys that are the immediate line of protection from the defense. The interior offensive line (like back-up tight end) is a spot where, thus far, Veach hasn’t really been willing to commit many resources, either in free agent dollars or draft picks. That could catch up with him next offseason with all four of those players set to hit free agency and limited cap dollars available. Here’s to hoping that Rankin and Allegretti (or maybe even Darryl Williams) can show enough this season to give the Chiefs some insurance on the interior of their offensive line moving forward.
This is definitely a position group to keep an eye on as reports come out of training camp on how the line is shaping up this season.
Now let’s move to the defensive side of the ball.
