The Kansas City Chiefs could lose a ton of free agents in 2021

Running Backs

1. Anthony Sherman
2. DeAndre Washington
3. Darrel Williams

This is where things start getting a little more interesting. The Chiefs future at running back is clearly Clyde Edwards-Helaire. With potential starter Damien Williams opting out of the 2020 season, CEH will likely either be the starter or, at the very least, a regular contributor right out of the gate. Anthony Sherman is back again as the starting fullback in 2020, but will the Chiefs be able to keep him around again after this season? Is it possible they decide to move away from a fullback all together? That could be interesting to watch.

I personally believe that Darwin Thompson was a lock to make the roster even before Damien Williams opted out. As the only other option under contract (and cheap) in 2021, it makes sense that they would keep him over players like Darrel Williams or DeAndre Washington that they would need to re-sign in 2021. It’s possible that both Darrel and Washington make the team in 2020 now with Damien gone, but the dire cap situation in 2021 makes a long-term future in K.C. much less likely.

I’m curious to see the pecking order during training camp practices as the season nears. That could give some insight into how much of a future the Chiefs see for them in K.C.

Next up, the wide receivers set to become free agents in 2021.
