Five preseason stars who fooled Kansas City Chiefs fans
5. Bobby Sippio
Wide receiver Bobby Sippio joined Kansas City in the 2007 offseason after establishing himself as an Arena Football League superstar with playmaking speed and excellent quickness. In his best AFL season, Sippio had 125 catches for 1,700+ yards and over 50 touchdowns!
The Chiefs hoped that his skills would translate into a highly effective contributor on the offense, but in 2007, he was uninspired and failed to contribute that season. The Chiefs brought him back anyway for training camp in 2008 and he led all Chiefs receivers in catches and yards during that four-game stretch.
It was not enough for Sippio or the team, and they cut him before the regular season. He played some in the AFL that season and also had a stint in the United Football League as well.
Sippio did make another run at the NFL, when in August of 2009, he signed with the Detroit Lions. In the preseason’s four games, he led all receivers and seemed like he may be on the verge of reaching his potential. However, the Lions still cut Sippio before the season started, and the AFL standout returned to the league that made him a superstar for two more seasons.
He finished his AFL career with 199 receiving touchdowns, the 16th most in league history. His 53 touchdowns in the 2007 season are still the 6th highest single-season mark in league history.
Sippio made headlines again in 2012 when he was charged with attempted murder and multiple other felonies. He never played football professionally again.
