John Lovett

John Lovett is a fun project who the Chiefs stashed away on IR last season. He was a college quarterback at Princeton, but looked like a possible option as a fullback/H-back/tight end type in the NFL.

With K.C.’s lack of proven weapons behind Travis Kelce at tight end and no heir apparent to Anthony Sherman at fullback, there could have been room for Lovett to earn himself a spot on this team with a strong offseason and preseason performance.

The current problem for Lovett is that he either needs to show he is so good as a fullback that he can beat out Sherman without taking a single preseason snap (not happening), or that he offers enough upside as a H-back/tight end to keep him over either Deon Yelder or Ricky Seals-Jones. I think that was probably a long shot to begin with, but with no preseason, it seems even more unlikely.

I think the best hope for Lovett at this point is to show enough upside as a fullback to stash on the practice squad and possibly be a cheap replacement option for Sherman next season.

Next up, an offensive line prospect I really like.
