Darrel Williams

Several fans are likely going to disagree on this one. I think the Chiefs will carry four running backs and a fullback this season, those being Damien Williams, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, DeAndre Washington, and Darwin Thompson, with Anthony Sherman at fullback. I know some of you will argue that Darrel could make the team over either Thompson or Washington, but hear me out.

The Chiefs just drafted Thompson last season. They also trusted him enough to have him active as the only backup for Damien in the Super Bowl over veteran LeSean McCoy. I think Thompson flashed enough in his rookie season that they’ll keep him around. They have Damien and their first round pick in CEH to handle the bulk of the carries. Meanwhile, Thompson offers more as a gadget type weapon for Reid to use off the bench than Darrel does.

To make matter worse for Darrel, the Chiefs went out and signed a player with significantly more NFL experience and production than he has in DeAndre Washington who had 679 yards of total offense for the Oakland Raiders last season. Washington is also a good pass protection back and has experience playing with Mahomes from their days together at Texas Tech. Again, maybe if they had a full offseason, Darrel could prove he is clearly better than one of those guys. However, I think when the time comes, he’ll be the odd man out.

Next up, a possible wideout cut.
