With Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones recently extended, Chiefs fans have every reason to be ecstatic.

Kansas City Chiefs fans might be the happiest sports fans right now. That is not something Chiefs fans have been able to say in a long, long time.

Think of where the franchise was before—what have they gone through in the last 50 years, since their last Super Bowl victory. The Chiefs have dealt with a lot of gut-wrenching moments. From heart-breaking playoff losses, to key players leaving the team, to tragic deaths of fan favorites, it has not been easy being a part of Chiefs Kingdom over the years.

If you ask 20 different Chiefs fans for the worst moment in franchise history to date, you might get 20 different answers. Yet even as discouraging as history has been, this fan base has always cared about the team. Although Arrowhead Stadium saw a lot of empty seats during the team’s 2-14 season in 2012, disgruntled Chiefs fans voiced their frustrations by flying banners over the stadium during pregame. They also wore black to a home game as part of “Blackout Arrowhead” because they wanted change and demanded a better product.

Prior to February of 2020, this franchise had only one Super Bowl win, but it also held a rich and decorated history. The franchise has had some of the best coaches and players in NFL history. When you look back at the team’s history, it is a surprise knowing they had only one championship before this past February.

Fifty years after their first Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs became the best team in the world. It was a special moment for Chiefs fans. The franchise now faced challenges it has never faced before. How do they keep and extend Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones to long-term deals while putting themselves in position to win the Super Bowl again?

General manager Brett Veach put in a lot of work for this moment, starting as early as the 2019 offseason by restructuring deals. Despite having just $177 of cap room at one point this offseason, Veach managed to strike a deal with Mahomes, then with Jones a week later. Veach is doing what the Chiefs and their fans expected from Scott Pioli when he replaced Carl Peterson in 2009.

Think about this: the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl; brought back their entire coaching staff; drafted a phenomenal running back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire; extended their best offensive player and most dominant defensive player, in which both were seeking big-money extensions; and have brought back 20 of their 22 starters. Following a Super Bowl win, the Chiefs have been very active in making sure they repeat as champions, giving Chiefs fans a reason to believe this is the best offseason ever.

The Chiefs are reigning champions and are poised with a bright future, both short-term and long-term. That is not something Chiefs Kingdom has been comfortable saying before with any certainty. Yes, there was some false hope before. But coming off a Super Bowl win, and with the offseason moves made by Veach, you can be sure that the future is bright in Kansas City, especially under Andy Reid’s guidance.

Chiefs fans have endured some heart-breaking losses while watching other teams hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Now, 31 other fan bases want to trade spots with Chiefs fans. They want what the Chiefs have because they know the Chiefs are projected to have a dynasty and can manufacture a run similar to what the New England Patriots had the last two decades.

Chiefs Kingdom: you deserved the Super Bowl win five months ago. You damn sure deserve the additional Super Bowl wins coming soon. Enjoy every single moment.
