The Kansas City Chiefs were one of seven teams to which Jamal Adams would approve a trade.

It’s not as if the Kansas City Chiefs are in need of an expensive starting safety or anything, but that hasn’t stopped rumors from churning that Jamal Adams has interest in playing for Andy Reid anyway. Trade rumors regarding the New York Jets star safety won’t go away, and the latest post from NFL reporter Adam Schefter on Twitter will only fan the flames for predictions for Adams’ market.

Earlier this offseason, contract talks for an extension stalled and a trade was considered “very possible.” On Thursday, Schefter posted seven potential teams to which Adams said he would welcome a trade, per an unnamed source. Here’s the post.

Every one of the teams listed is expected to be in the playoffs in 2020, so it’s obvious that Adams is ready to start playing for a contender versus a team like the Jets that’s sitting at home every January. Adams does play in the biggest market around, but listing a team like Kansas City makes it clear that winning (and not market) is most important.

The Chiefs were inclined to add another expensive safety to the team even after signing Tyrann Mathieu to a three-year contract last spring. You might remember that the Chiefs reportedly had a free agent deal worked out with Earl Thomas before he bolted for bigger money with the Baltimore Ravens. However, the Chiefs switched gears and added a second safety via the draft in the second round when they selected Juan Thornhill.

It’s hard to imagine the Chiefs have room at all for Adams with both Thornhill and Mathieu on the books with two or more years remaining for both players. In addition, Daniel Sorensen is one of the team’s top earners as the third safety. Of course, any team would love to make room for a talent like Adams—and perhaps the case could be made to switch Mathieu full-time to a slot corner role—but given the team’s financial picture as well surrounding Chris Jones and Patrick Mahomes, it just makes zero sense to trade for him unless some finances were to shift as well.
