Patrick Mahomes and Tyrann Mathieu recently participated in a Black Lives Matter video.
As the country continues to see Black Lives Matter protests coast to coast after the murder of George Floyd, several of the biggest stars in the National Football League have come together to not only show support for the movement but to ask the league itself to issue a statement.
Both star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and safety Tyrann Mathieu of the Kansas City Chiefs were part of a new video that was just released on Twitter on Thursday along with several other household names. During the first part of the video, Mahomes and others identify with the many African-Americans in our country who have been killed in acts of police brutality with “I am” statements. Together, they state that it could have easily been any of them.
The second half of the video is a statement from the players to league officials declaring that they will continue to protest and “will not be silenced.” They then ask the NFL to release a statement supporting the Black Lives Matter movement while simultaneously admitting “wrong in silencing our players from peacefully protesting.”
Here’s the complete video:
A full transcript of what was said in the video above:
"It’s been 10 days since George Floyd was brutally murdered. How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players? What will it take? For one of us to be murdered by police brutality? What if I was George Floyd?I am George Floyd. I am Breonna Taylor. I am Ahmaud Arbery. I am Eric Garner. I am Laquan McDonald. I am Tamir Rice. I am Trayvon Martin. I am Walter Scott. I am Michael Brown Jr. I am Samuel DuBose. I am Frank Smart. I am Phillip White. I am Jordan Baker. We will not be silenced. We assert our right to peacefully protest. It shouldn’t take this long to admit. So, on behalf of the National Football League, this is what we, the players, would like to hear you state: “We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people. We, the National Football League, admit wrong in silencing our players from peacefully protesting. We, the National Football League, believe Black Lives Matter.”"
The Kansas City Chiefs then followed suit by retweeting the video and pledging their “love and support” for their players.
Alongside Mahomes and Mathieu, several of the NFL’s marquee players also took part, including New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, Washington Redskins rookie Chase Young, Dallas Cowboys back Zeke Elliott, Arizona Cardinals wideout DeAndre Hopkins, New York Jets safety Jamal Adams, New England Patriots corner Stephon Gilmore, and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas was the organizer behind the video.
