AFC West Draft Winner: Denver Broncos

The Broncos had, by far, my favorite draft. If you remember, last year, the Broncos added Missouri quarterback Drew Lock as their quarterback for the future. He ended the season on a strong note, but notably lacked weapons and protection. That was fixed in this year’s draft. In the first round, the Broncos took Jerry Jeudy, the wide receiver from Alabama, who I think was the best receiver in this draft class. He will instantly upgrade this offense and provides a great 1-2 punch with Courtland Sutton. In round two, John Elway decided to keep his quarterback happy and added another wide receiver in K.J. Hamler out of Penn State.

In round three, the Broncos added a great cornerback in Michael Ojemudia out of Iowa. I’ve watched him over the years and he has real potential to be a solid NFL cornerback. With their second third round pick, the Broncos added center Lloyd Cushenberry. One of Denver’s biggest problems last year (and frankly for a number of years) has been protection. Upgrading their line was a must, and the Broncos are certainly acknowledging and improving on that weakness.

The Broncos rounded out their draft class with defensive tackle McTelvin Agim, tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, liebacker Justin Strnad, offensive guard Netance Muti, wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland, and defensive end Derrek Tuszka. I think the Broncos spectacularly acknowledged where they had problems and where they needed to improve and addressed those head on in the draft.

The Broncos are now the team that could give the Chiefs a run for their money. They have a young quarterback with potential with plenty of weapons around him and further protection on the line. They also maintain a good defense. While I definitely believe that until you actually unseat the champs (drink!) you are not competing for the West, the Broncos are on their way to forming a great team. I actually look forward to some competitive games in the future when real live sports resumes. (Not that I don’t enjoy competitive watermelon seed spitting contests).

Hang in there, Chiefs Kingdo. Stay safe and keep celebrating Super Bowl LIV!
