The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly signed former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Cameron Erving.

The Dallas Cowboys continue to remake their offensive front in the 2020 offseason with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Cameron Erving.

Erving was allowed to walk by the Chiefs this offseason when the team refused to pick up an option for the 2020 season. That move made Erving a free agent and now that the draft has settled, the Cowboys and other such teams had the chance to see their post-draft needs and address them accordingly.

Erving had been with the Chiefs ever since the 2017 preseason when new general manager Brett Veach decided to trade a fifth round pick to the Cleveland Browns for the versatile lineman. Erving would spend the next three seasons as a plug-and-play option for the Chiefs at a few positions along the line, although his performance would never win him a permanent job at any of them.

Erving has the experience to play either tackle or guard position for the Cowboys, who have already been tasked with replacing Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick this offseason. Frederick retired back in March. The Cowboys ended up re-signing Joe Looney and then drafted Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz in the fourth round of the draft.

Any spotlight on Erving is always going to be bigger than it should be given that he was a first-round selection for the Cleveland Browns. His versatility and athleticism are assets, to be sure, but Erving has failed to find a starting role now at multiple positions for two teams. Erving’s future is likely going to be a series of these sorts of one-year contracts as a journeyman lineman who comes with a first-round pedigree.
