The Kansas City Chiefs are among several teams spending some time getting to know cornerback Trevon Diggs before the 2020 NFL Draft gets underway.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to interview prospects over FaceTime and other digital applications before the 2020 NFL Draft gets underway and the latest known connection features heralded cornerback Trevon Diggs from the University of Alabama.

Diggs, the younger brother of wide receiver Stefon Diggs, has impressed as the highest level of college football and is generally considered a lock to be taken early in the draft. While he’s not mentioned in conjunction with Jeff Okudah or C.J. Henderson, Diggs is most definitely in conversation to be the third corner off the board and is a good bet to be a Round 1 selection.

Diggs really came into his own during his senior year at Bama and he should continue to blossom in the pros. He was a heavily recruited wide receiver out of high school and even played offense and special teams for the Crimson Tide his freshman year. He didn’t switch to playing defense only until 2017 and then he lost half a season to injury in 2018. In short, he’s still gaining the muscle memory from the position and should only improve as a pro.

That’s good news for a team like the Chiefs who sit at the bottom of Round 1 waiting for the right name to fall to them. While the Chiefs might enjoy falling back a bit into Round 2 and picking up an extra draft asset or two, they might be more interested in a known commodity at a position of need at the right time. Diggs could certainly be that player.

The Chiefs could use a long-term, high-ceiling investment in the secondary, especially at cornerback, if they want to lock down the security of the unit overall for the next few years. Charvarius Ward can handle one boundary position and Bashaud Breeland was re-signed to a one-year deal to occupy the other half. Beyond this season, however, only Ward and Rashad Fenton are under contract in terms of experienced corners. The Chiefs also have Antonio Hamilton and Alex Brown for 2020.

The presence of Diggs in that unit would not only create serious competition for the starting roles in 2020 but would also elevate the unit for the foreseeable future. Ward will get more expensive in the next year and beyond as a restricted free agent in 2021 and Fenton’s ceiling is not yet known. He’s a solid contributor, but having a lockdown corner would add some certainty to that level of the defense.

Diggs had 37 total tackles last season for the Crimson Tide. He also added 3 interceptions, 8 passes defended, and 2 fumble recoveries. He’d also give the Chiefs some return experience and special teams acumen in case they wanted him to start further down the depth chart.
