Cornerback – Reggie Robinson – Tulsa

While the re-signing of of Bashaud Breeland helped a lot, the Chiefs still have a major need at cornerback. The Chiefs lost Kendall Fuller in free agency, Breeland is only on a one year deal, and Charvarius Ward will be a restricted free agent next year.

The Chiefs need to add some starting caliber talent to their cornerback room to give them the necessary depth to survive this season and give them some long term stability at a crucial position in the future. I would be thrilled if they drafted one in the first round, but I’m at a little bit of a loss when it comes to which corners will be available and which one is the best for KC of that group (see the honorable mention group below).

I’m not at a loss when it comes to Reggie Robinson of Tulsa. I love his game and think he’s another player that’s being criminally undervalued by a lot of “experts” out there. I’ve seen Robinson going in the 5th round of mock drafts and I just don’t see how a corner with his size, speed, and ball skills lasts near that long. I actually think he’s more likely to go in the 2nd or 3rd round and I’d be thrilled if the Chiefs were the team to draft him there.

Robinson is 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds with a good wingspan. He ran a 4.44 second time in the 40-yard dash at the Combine and also put up 22 bench press reps. He’s sticky in press coverage and has good enough ball skills to be successful in zone coverage with some good coaching. Robinson had an impressive 17 pass break ups last season, which was more than any of the corners being mocked in the first round. In the clips in the tweets below you can see his incredible ball skills.

I feel pretty confident that the Chiefs will take a cornerback in this week’s draft. It may be in the first round, but if its not, I’m not sure there’s a corner with a higher upside that they could target than Reggie Robinson.

Honorable Mention: The First Round Cluster of Corners

I’ve watched a ton of tape on the group of corners that are widely considered possibilities in the late first round. Those corners include Kristian Fulton, Jeff Gladney, Jaylon Johnson, A.J. Terrell, and Trevon Diggs. I wish I could sit here with confidence and tell you which of them is going to be the best NFL corner, but I’m still not sure. I’d be fine with the Chiefs drafting any of them and also wouldn’t be upset if they passed on any of them for one of the others on this list.

Basically, if Steve Spagnuolo prefers one of those five more than the others, that’s good enough for me. I think they’d all make a good long term investments for the Chiefs defense.

Finally, let’s look at the safety position.
