#1 – Patrick Mahomes, Quarterback

The Chiefs have not made a 1st round pick since 2017. Soon, they’ll answer the question about whether or not they will make one in 2020. Perhaps the reason they have not made one since then is that the franchise refuses to tempt fate and grapple with perfection.

In the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs trade a massive haul to move up from the 26th pick in the draft all the way to the 10th selection. With it, they took a ‘project’ quarterback, a strong-armed gunslinger with accuracy and decision-making issues, from Texas Tech named Patrick Lavone Mahomes II. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mahomes started only one game his rookie year, but it was a winning effort over the Denver Broncos. He took over the full time starting job in 2018 and the franchise, its fans, and the NFL world have never been the same.

In two years as a starter, Mahomes has been a Pro Bowler in both years, a 1st Team All-Pro selection in 2018, the 2018 NFL MVP, the 2019 Super Bowl LIV MVP, and a slew of other accolades.

In 2018, he became only the third player in NFL history to record 50 touchdown passes and over 5000 yards passing in the same season. In three seasons (not really), he has 9,400 passing yards, 76 touchdowns and a Super Bowl ring. He is 4-1 in career playoff games and has 13 touchdown passes to only 2 interceptions in postseason play.

As records continue to fall and accolades continue to pile up, we must all marvel in the brilliance and transcendence that is Mahomes. He is one of the most talented quarterbacks who has ever played the game of football, and barring colossal injury or horribly inept team management, he’ll go down as arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.

He is the single greatest draft pick in Chiefs history, and has only really played two seasons.
