The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed wide receiver Demarcus Robinson on a one-year contract that will keep the offense loaded for 2020.

Just when you thought the Kansas City Chiefs might have to reload their offensive weapons to some degree this offseason comes the news from NFL reporter Tom Pelissero that the team has decided to re-sign wide receiver Demarcus Robinson.

The Chiefs were seeing Robinson’s name linked with other teams so far this offseason and it felt like the team could lose Robinson as an unrestricted free agent as well as Sammy Watkins due to the looming cap hit of $21 million. Instead Watkins remains on the roster a couple weeks into free agency and now the team is bringing back Robinson on a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not made known as of press time.

Robinson was previously linked with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants before free agency began as a likely target for the team. Then the first real substantive rumor came in recent days when the Green Bay Packers reportedly checked in on Robinson before deciding to sign former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Devin Funchess instead.

Robinson set several career highs for the Chiefs last season as a more integral part of the offense than ever before. Those totals were helped by an early season injury to Tyreek Hill through the season’s first handful of games, but the team clearly wants to bring back Robinson to keep the chemistry between him and other pass catchers intact.

Still only 25, Robinson has plenty of room to grow as a receiver and it will be interesting to see if Watkins is also brought back or whether Robinson’s role will grow in his absence. Then again, Mecole Hardman should also see an increased role after averaging over 20 yards per catch during his rookie campaign. It should be noted that this year’s draft class is also considered one of the deepest ever at the position which could add another player in the next month to the roster.

Last season, Robinson finished with 32 catches on 55 targets for 449 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. Robinson began his career as part of the same draft class that brought in Tyreek Hill in 2016 as the Chiefs fifth round pick.
