Jordan Lucas

The Chiefs’ strongest defensive position right now is arguably safety with the duo of Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill. However, if they wanted to make a move at safety for depth in free agency, they could look at resigning Jordan Lucas.

Lucas came over to the Chiefs from the Miami Dolphins in a trade right before the start of the 2018 season. Since then, Lucas has played in 30 games for the Chiefs and started 4. He’s mostly been a backup, but when he’s played he’s made some big plays such as an impressive 49-yard interception return against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Lucas would be a solid option for the Chiefs to sign to a cheap deal and keep as a backup in case Mathieu or Thornhill are forced to miss some time. With the Chiefs’ current safety situation, they don’t really need to look for a starter and Lucas would be a perfect backup option.

Jeff Heath

Another good backup option for the Chiefs is Jeff Heath of the Dallas Cowboys. Heath has been in the league since 2013 and has played in 106 games. This past season, Heath started all 13 games he played in and racked up 63 tackles.

His best two seasons were in 2017 and 2018; in 2017 he put up 3 interceptions and 71 tackles and in 2018 he put up 1 interception and 85 tackles. While he didn’t play as much or as well this past season, he would still be a nice addition for the Chiefs.

Heath would be a player that the Chiefs wouldn’t sign to start, but as a solid backup. At 29 years old, Heath is a veteran player who would be a great cheap addition to give the Chiefs more depth at safety. In the event that the Chiefs see any injuries to their safeties, Heath would be a dependable fill in man.
