A big reason for the gamble on Veach’s part was his decision to allow the team out of these players in the event that it did not pan out. However, now that it has the team has quite the pickle on their hands:

Kansas City has only two cornerbacks under contract for the 2020 season – Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton.  A former undrafted rookie free agent entering his third season, and a sixth round pick entering his second. That’s…a little more than terrifying.

The Chiefs’ need at the cornerback position is significant. The team must procure or retain the services of at least three, and probably four or more players before the start training camp.

Of course the presence of Mathieu will allow the team to be a little more picky about how it approaches the position – there is no doubt that the need is great here for the Chiefs.

It seems almost inevitable that Veach will address this position in both the NFL Draft, mentioned here, and also in free agency. For what it’s worth, I do not believe the team will retain any of it’s free agent cornerbacks this offseason. I would expect this to be one of the most active positions for Kansas City between now and July.
