The Kansas City Chiefs failed to land a single compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft as the official list was handed out on Tuesday.

As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs will be one of the few teams to go without a single compensatory pick in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft, per a press release, despite losing a few key free agents last spring.

Every year, the NFL hands out compensatory picks in the upcoming draft based on a formula that’s tough to crack for the outsider. The fine folks at Over the Cap have a nice projection system they use every year and, for the most part, they’re able to guess correctly, but suffice it to say, until the NFL releases the official list, no one knows for sure.

The picks are handed out by the NFL to help compensate teams for the free agent losses suffered from the previous spring. Last year, for example, the Chiefs saw Mitch Morse leave after several years as their starting center. He signed a big money deal with the Buffalo Bills and had the Chiefs stood pat in free agency regarding such a big ticket item, they would have been awarded an extra pick. Instead, the Chiefs signed Tyrann Mathieu which offset the loss of Morse.

Compensatory picks are given at the end of each round from Round 3 through the end of the draft and, as of the last few draft, comp picks are tradable assets.

The NFL handed out 32 compensatory picks in 2020 but only 15 teams received one or more, which means some teams were handsomely compensated for their losses. The New England Patriots, who watched free agents like Trent Brown and Trey Flowers leave a year ago, were the most rewarded team with four compensatory picks.

The Chiefs rank No. 15 all time in compensatory picks (since ’94) with 25 total. The Baltimore Ravens have been awarded more than any other franchise to date with 52.
