Danny Trevathan considered realistic fit for Chiefs defense
By Matt Conner
Bleacher Report recently released a list of a “realistic dream” free agents for each team, and the Kansas City Chiefs were linked with Danny Trevathan.
On the eve of free agency, there are myriad lists being published left and right with rankings for each positions, potential moves that could happen, and the like. One interesting list takes a “realistic” look for each team. Instead of spending major bucks for each franchise, it acknowledges the limitations of the salary cap, fit, scheme, etc.
When it comes to Kansas City, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report says that veteran linebacker Danny Trevathan is a fit for the Chiefs in free agency.
Trevathan will be a familiar name to Chiefs fans from his days with the Denver Broncos in the AFC West. For the last four years, Trevathan was a member of the Chicago Bears defense, the same unit that turned heads league-wide with Vic Fangio at the helm.
Trevathan is on the verge of turning 30 these days and has a hard time staying healthy for a full season. In his career of eight seasons, only four of them have found Trevathan able to start all or the vast majority of games at 15 or 16. Last year he started only 9 games for the Bears before being placed on injured reserve for an elbow injury suffered against the Detroit Lions in early November.
The Chiefs are losing a couple linebackers this offseason in Reggie Ragland and Darron Lee as unrestricted free agents and this is the final season for a couple more. It makes sense that the Chiefs might look at linebacker options in free agency and the draft. Trevathan could be a potential replacement for Ragland as a smart run-stopping option for Steve Spagnuolo.
Trevathan had 70 tackles, 5 quarterback hits and 1 sack last season for the Bears. He has 9 career sacks, 8 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, and 34 batted passes.
