Tyrann Mathieu, Chris Harris and the best Twitter conversation ever
By Matt Conner
If you thought Tyrann Mathieu‘s primary value was on the field, wait until you see his work as the Chiefs head recruiter.
In case you tend to avoid social media like the plague (good for you, actually) or if you just happened to miss some meaningful Twitter banter from Tuesday afternoon, you might have missed the most important conversation in Twitter’s history.
Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is no stranger to using his social accounts for good use. He’s often inspiring, challenging, connecting and, as of late, he’s also recruiting.
We’re here for it.
On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos struck a nice deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in one of the first big moves of the NFL offseason by trading fourth round pick to the Jags for cornerback A.J. Bouye. This brings a 28-year-old veteran who comes with a $13 million cap hit to the Broncos secondary. Given Kareem Jackson‘s cap hit as well as the looming paycheck for Justin Simmons, the secondary itself is about to become very expensive overall.
Thus, it looks like the outsider in this instance will be cornerback Chris Harris, a longtime member of the Broncos who played alongside Von Miller during the team’s Super Bowl 50 win. Harris is set to hit unrestricted free agency with the new league year, but now it appears the Broncos have officially moved on.
Shortly after the Broncos traded for Bouye, Harris took to Twitter. Check out the following exchange from Tuesday:
Less than an hour later, Mathieu responded:
Harris’ answer was quite positive.
We’re pretty sure Mathieu’s people is basically Brett Veach and his staff, and many of us are hoping for the same results as Mathieu and Harris.
The Chiefs have a nice young pair of corners locked up for the foreseeable future in Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton. Bashaud Breeland is looking for a nice payday after taking a cheap, prove-it deal to play in K.C. last season, and Kendall Fuller is already attracting free agent interest from other teams. Mo Claiborne is also a free agent, but rarely played as is, and the Chiefs are likely to move on entirely from all three.
The Chiefs would do well to bring in a young corner in the draft, but it also makes sense to add a veteran. Harris is certainly a familiar face having played the team twice per year in the division since he first arrived in Denver. Last season for the Broncos, he had 56 tackles, 6 passes defended and 1 interception. He has 20 in his career.
Harris, who will turn 31 years old in June, still have plenty left in the tank, which is why the Cowboys, Raiders, Lions, Jets, and Texans are also reportedly interested in bringing him in.
