LeSean McCoy will not be returning to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, but a reunion in Philly could be in the cards instead.

Over the last couple months of the season, the best way to describe what happened to LeSean McCoy’s status with the Kansas City Chiefs is to say he faded from view. He went from the most productive running back in the first half to needing rest to being a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl.

Turnovers were partially to blame, but McCoy just seemed to disappear from view entirely by the postseason’s end. Now he’s expected to fade completely out of the picture this offseason with word from NFL reporter Mike Garafolo that the Chiefs won’t be bringing him back in 2020.

"Certainly in LeSean McCoy’s mind, he thinks he’s got some good football left in him. It will not be in Kansas City for him in 2020, and this is a little bit of a different scenario. He’s been in such high demand throughout his career. This is one where it’s going to have to wind up being the right fit."

That doesn’t necessarily mean that McCoy will be hanging up his cleats just yet. Garafolo has a couple other teams in view for the veteran running back. Here’s the report from Yahoo! Sports:

"I would not discount the possibility of him returning to the Eagles. I also would not discount the possibility he meets up with Anthony Lynn out of the Chargers who are going to have some changes in the backfield."

McCoy began the season as an exciting preseason import for K.C. Damien Williams averaged an embarrassing 2.1 yards/carry through the season’s first eight games (a sign that he was dealing with an injury or something else for quite some time), but the presence of McCoy allowed Damien space to work through things.

McCoy had 362 rushing yards through the first eight games of the year, good for a 5.25 yards/carry average. He also caught 19 passes for 129 yards in that time. Unfortunately he also had a couple costly fumbles that hurt the Chiefs significantly. From there, he started to disappear on Sundays, with Andy Reid resorting to excuses of saving him for the stretch run—a stretch which never appeared.

How much does McCoy have left? Even after winning a Super Bowl with the Chiefs, McCoy might have a bit of a chip on his shoulder in 2020.
